How Ayumu Differs From General AI
Ayumu answers with your runs, Apple Health data, routes and race plans in mind. It is designed to advise from research-based standards while respecting safety boundaries and your pace.
Everything Connected
Draws on your runs, Apple Health data you allow it to read, routes and the races you've entered. When a metric hasn't been recorded, it is designed to say so.
Built on Research
Peer-reviewed research and published guidelines are the standard for its advice. It may only cite works listed in the evidence ledger.
Respects Your Pace & Safety
It holds back on harder sessions when your load is rising quickly, and shows a fixed emergency message when you describe an emergency sign. It is not meant to diagnose, and refers you to professionals.
ACWR — Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio
The app and Ayumu compare your recent load with your usual load (ACWR) to show how your training load is changing, as a guide. It signals load change; it does not predict injuries or guarantee safety.
÷
Chronic Load (28-day avg)
The app labels 0.8–1.3 as gradual change, above 1.3 as load rising quickly, and below 0.8 as lighter than usual. These bands are reference guides. ACWR is not a validated injury predictor, and researchers have pointed out problems with the concept (Impellizzeri et al. 2020). The "sweet spot" idea comes from Gabbett (2016) but is now disputed, so Ayumu doesn't use it. When load is rising quickly, Ayumu holds back on harder sessions and suggests easy running or recovery. Even when the number is within the band, rest if you're in pain or unusually tired.
Citations Come Only From the Ledger
When Ayumu cites evidence in an answer, it may only cite works listed in the evidence ledger. Answers that cite other studies aren't shown as they are. For each claim, the ledger gives a certainty grade from A to D and sets out what may and may not be said. Ayumu doesn't state specific figures as fact from evidence that isn't certain enough.
Scientific Evidence Categories
The evidence ledger is organised into the domains below. Each card shows the key points and representative studies for that domain. For the certainty of each claim and the full list of works, see the evidence ledger.
Endurance performance is broadly explained by three factors: VO₂max, lactate threshold and running economy. Durability over long efforts is a concept still being researched. Ayumu uses this as an explanatory framework.
A 10% weekly increase is a conservative guideline, not a safety guarantee. A single run that is suddenly much longer than usual has been more closely linked to injury. Most runners keep most of their running easy, but which intensity split works best is still unsettled.
Race time predictions are guides, and the range shown is not a statistical confidence interval. Predictions also tend to be optimistic for recreational runners. Before a race, the guide is to cut volume while keeping intensity.
Carbohydrate is given as per-kilogram guidance, with no calorie numbers. The basic rule for fluids is to drink to thirst, and drinking too much carries its own risk. Supplements and iron aren't recommended on your own; Ayumu suggests a blood test and a professional.
Heart rate variability (HRV) is read against your own usual values, together with sleep and how you feel. Ayumu never tells you to rest based on a single day's value. Seven to nine hours of sleep is the guide.
Injury risk involves many factors, including past injuries, load changes, pain and recovery. Ayumu never gives an injury probability from a single number. It advises against running with a fever, is not meant to diagnose, and refers you to professionals.
There is no cadence target that suits everyone. Raising your step rate a little from your usual value may reduce joint loading, but its effect on preventing injury is unclear. Grade-adjusted pace (GAP) is an approximation.
Getting used to heat takes one to two weeks of planned exposure. On hot days, Ayumu suggests slowing down, cooling off and drinking to thirst. Danger signs of heat illness are treated as emergencies.
Ayumu coaches without blame. When there are signs of mental ill-health, it suggests talking to a professional. It also watches for an unhealthy dependence on running.
For young runners, pregnant or postpartum runners, older runners and people with health conditions, Ayumu suggests a more gradual approach and assumes a doctor or midwife is involved. During pregnancy it doesn't set pace or distance goals. It never advises on medication or doses.
Wrist heart rate gets less accurate as intensity rises, and calorie estimates carry large errors. GPS distance can read short in cities and under trees. Ayumu doesn't treat these numbers as exact and puts trends and how you feel first.
Preferring a scenic or pleasant route is not evidence that it is safe. Comfort and safety from traffic or crime are treated as separate questions.

Why Ayumu
"Ayumu" (歩む) means "to walk forward, step by step" in Japanese — the coaching philosophy itself. Not to run faster right now, but to keep growing as a runner over time.
Data Honesty — Works from your actual records and is designed not to make up numbers that aren't there.
Safety First — Looking after your body comes before pace gains. Changes in training load are shown as a guide.
Long-Term Development — Not one race, but lifelong growth as a runner.
Humble AI — Doesn't state uncertain or disputed points as settled, and says how strong the evidence is.
You Decide — Deep Think and Agent run only when you choose them. By default, Agent's plan changes apply only when you tap Apply, and you can tap Undo within 7 days.
