Ayumu's three commitments
Ayumu, RouteRun's AI coach, is designed around three commitments: it works from your own runs, it follows established sports science, and it respects your pace. This page explains what each one means in the app.

Commitment 1: Your running, in one place
Ayumu works from the runs recorded in RouteRun, including runs you've brought in from Apple Health. You don't have to explain how much or how fast you've been running every time you ask something.
- When you're online, Ayumu replies with your recent runs in mind. Sensitive data is kept to a minimum before anything is sent.
- When you're offline, Ayumu switches to replies generated entirely on your device, tagged Offline. If you've used up this week's allowance, you can choose Continue in light mode or wait for the allowance to reset.
- When it helps, Ayumu may add one chart of your own records. The app draws the chart from your records; the AI never writes the numbers. If there isn't enough data, no chart is shown.
- If a reply stops at the length limit, tap Continue to see the rest.
A coach who knows your context can give advice that fits your situation. That's why routes, run history, training plans and coaching all live in one app.
Commitment 2: Grounded in research
Ayumu's advice follows established sports-science frameworks, such as:
- Fitness level and training paces: Daniels' VDOT
- Race time prediction: Riegel (1981) and Daniels' VDOT. Predicted times are shown as a guide with a range; the range isn't a statistical confidence interval
- Cardiac drift: the work of Coyle and González-Alonso
To look at how your training load is changing, Ayumu also uses ACWR (the acute:chronic workload ratio), but only as a guide to how quickly your load is changing. ACWR is a population-level guide; the number alone can't tell you your own injury risk, and it's no guarantee against injury.
Ayumu may only cite works listed in the evidence ledger. Answers that cite other studies aren't shown as they are. For each claim, the ledger gives a certainty grade from A to D. Where the evidence is less certain or researchers disagree, Ayumu doesn't state things as settled and says how strong the evidence is.
We only cite sources whose names and details can be checked. You'll find the list, with summaries, in Research behind RouteRun.
Commitment 3: Respect for your pace
Ayumu isn't designed to push you. It respects every pace you run and avoids pressure-driven language that takes the fun out of running. This follows self-determination theory from Deci and Ryan, which holds that people keep at something longer when they feel it's their own choice.
You stay in charge
- The chat mode is Auto by default. Auto usually answers quickly and takes extra care only for injury or pain questions (this doesn't use your Deep Think count). Deep Think and Agent run only when you choose them.
- When Agent drafts a change to your training plan, it shows the plan before and after. By default, your plan only changes if you tap Apply. After applying, you can tap Undo within 7 days to go back to the previous plan.
- You can choose how much may change automatically in AI Agent Mode in Settings. You're notified of anything changed automatically.
When your load rises quickly
When ACWR goes above its reference range and your load is rising quickly, Ayumu holds off on suggesting harder workouts and suggests recovery instead. The app describes ACWR like this:
| ACWR | What it suggests |
|---|---|
| Below 0.8 | Lighter than usual |
| 0.8–1.3 | Gradual change |
| Above 1.3 | Rising quickly |
This is a guide to how load is changing, not a prediction of injury. If something hurts or feels wrong, rest whatever the number says, and see a professional if you need to.
If you mention worrying symptoms
In short
All three commitments share one aim: helping you keep running, healthily, for a long time. Ayumu is designed to protect the enjoyment of running itself, rather than chase short-term results.
