4. Apple Watch

RouteRun measures distance and pace with the GPS of your iPhone or Apple Watch. When the GPS signal is weak, your position or distance can be off.
1. Check the notice on the run screen
When you tap Start Run on iPhone, the countdown starts without waiting for GPS, and accuracy improves as you run. If the signal was weak when you started, a notice appears at the top of the run screen.
| Message (run screen) | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| GPS was weak at start — distance may be less accurate | GPS accuracy was low when you started. | Accuracy improves once you're in an open area. Distance and pace for the first part of the run may be off. |
| Location accuracy is limited. Distance and pace may be inaccurate. | Precise Location is off. | Turn on Precise Location in step 2. |
- When you look back at that run later, the review screen also shows GPS signal was weak at the start of this run.
- Waiting a little in an open spot before you tap Start Run reduces errors in the first part of the run.
- To run indoors, choose Treadmill as the Free Run type. It doesn't use GPS.
If the GPS wait screen appears
The GPS wait screen appears only when you start from a past run on the History tab with Run This Route Again, or when the run couldn't start. Depending on what it shows:
| Message | What it means | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Acquiring GPS… | The app is finding your position. | Wait a little outdoors, where you can see open sky. The wait time is shown. |
| GPS Ready | Your position is locked. | Tap Start Run. |
| GPS signal is weak. You can still start your run. | The signal is still weak after 30 seconds. | Move to an open spot and wait, or tap Start Now. |
| Can't Get Your Location | Location is off or not allowed. | Tap Open Settings and allow location (step 2). |
You can tap Start Now before GPS locks. Accuracy improves as you run.
2. Check your iPhone's location settings
If you see Location accuracy is limited. or Approximate Location Active, Precise Location is off. Distance and pace may be off in this state.
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Go to Privacy & Security > Location Services > RouteRun.
- Turn on Precise Location.
- Make sure location access is allowed.
3. Check where you run and your device
- Between tall buildings, under trees, and in tunnels or under roofs, the GPS signal gets weaker. Distance and pace are more likely to be off.
- With Low Power Mode on, GPS accuracy is reduced. Turn it off before a long run.
- Waiting a little in an open spot before you start reduces errors in the first part of the run.
4. Running with Apple Watch
Which device's GPS is used depends on where you started the run.
- Started on iPhone: the iPhone's location is used. While the Watch map shows Waiting for iPhone location, it's waiting for the iPhone to lock.
- Started on Apple Watch alone: the Watch's GPS is used.
While the Watch waits for GPS, it shows Acquiring GPS... and the seconds left. Tap Start Now to begin right away. In that case, distance is counted from when GPS locks.
| Message (Apple Watch) | What to do |
|---|---|
| GPS Timeout | No signal within 30 seconds. Go outdoors to an open spot and tap Retry. |
| Location Disabled | On iPhone, allow it in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > RouteRun. Indoors, you can run with Treadmill. |
| Weak GPS — distance may be estimated | The signal got weak during the run. It recovers in an open area. |
| Acquiring GPS… | The Watch is finding your position again during the run. Keep running. |
If something doesn't work
- Restart your iPhone or Apple Watch, then try again outdoors in an open spot.
- For how to run with the Watch, see Running with Apple Watch.
- To run indoors, see Running on a treadmill.
