4. Apple Watch

RouteRun measures distance and pace with the GPS of your iPhone or Apple Watch. When the GPS signal is weak, your position or distance can be off.

1. Check the screen before you start

When you tap Start Run on iPhone, a screen waits for GPS. Depending on what it shows:

MessageWhat it meansWhat to do
Acquiring GPS...The app is finding your position.Wait a little outdoors, where you can see open sky. The wait time is shown.
GPS ReadyYour position is locked.Tap Start Run.
GPS signal is weak. You can still start your run.The signal is still weak after 30 seconds.Move to an open spot and wait, or tap Start Now.
Can't Get Your LocationLocation is off or not allowed.Tap Open Settings and allow location (step 2).
  • You can tap Start Now before GPS locks. Accuracy improves as you run.
  • If you start with a weak signal, the run screen shows GPS was weak at start — distance may be less accurate.
  • To run indoors, choose Treadmill. It doesn't use GPS.

2. Check your iPhone's location settings

If you see Location accuracy is limited. or Approximate Location Active, Precise Location is off. Distance and pace may be off in this state.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
  2. Go to Privacy & Security > Location Services > RouteRun.
  3. Turn on Precise Location.
  4. Make sure location access is allowed.

3. Check where you run and your device

  • Between tall buildings, under trees, and in tunnels or under roofs, the GPS signal gets weaker. Distance and pace are more likely to be off.
  • With Low Power Mode on, GPS accuracy is reduced. Turn it off before a long run.
  • Waiting for GPS Ready in an open spot before you start reduces errors in the first part of the run.

4. Running with Apple Watch

Which device's GPS is used depends on where you started the run.

  • Started on iPhone: the iPhone's location is used. While the Watch map shows Waiting for iPhone location, it's waiting for the iPhone to lock.
  • Started on Apple Watch alone: the Watch's GPS is used.

While the Watch waits for GPS, it shows Acquiring GPS... and the seconds left. Tap Start Now to begin right away. In that case, distance is counted from when GPS locks.

Message (Apple Watch)What to do
GPS TimeoutNo signal within 30 seconds. Go outdoors to an open spot and tap Retry.
Location DisabledOn iPhone, allow it in Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > RouteRun. Indoors, you can run with Treadmill.
Weak GPS — distance may be estimatedThe signal got weak during the run. It recovers in an open area.
Acquiring GPS…The Watch is finding your position again during the run. Keep running.

If something doesn't work

  1. Restart your iPhone or Apple Watch, then try again outdoors in an open spot.
  2. For how to run with the Watch, see Running with Apple Watch.
  3. To run indoors, see Running on a treadmill.

If you're still stuck, email support@routerun.jp. It helps us if you include:

  • The OS versions of your iPhone and Apple Watch
  • Whether you started the run on iPhone or Apple Watch
  • The message on screen (the exact words if you can)
  • When you ran, and roughly where (city or ward is enough)
